Petit ensemble de poésies dont on dit parfois qu’elles ont servi d’ébauche au roman, de teneur hermétique ou abstraite (d’Arrigo était spécialiste de Hölderlin), évoquant les paysages et les habitants du détroit et de la Sicile.

— dans Caravane n°2 [incipit], 1990, traduit par XXX ;
— dans Les Lettres Nouvelles n° spécial [arrivée auprès de son père], 1976, traduit par Jean-Noël Schifano ;
— un troisième extrait [La morte scugnizza] fait partie de l’anthologie personnelle de Primo Levi, intitulée Ricerca delle radici, publié en 1981. Ce livre a été traduit sous le titre À la recherche des racines, par Marilène Raiola chez Mille et une Nuits en 1999.

L’édition anglaise
Les Anglais ont, comme les français, publié l’anthologie personnelle de Primo Levi, intitulée Ricerca delle radici (1981), où figure un extrait d’Horcynus orca [La morte scugnizza], sous le titre, Research for roots, par Peter Forbes chez Allen Lane en 2001.
Planifiée de longue date (un accord est signé entre Mondadori et un mystérieux éditeur américain en 1982), la traduction complète en langue anglaise de Stephen Sartarelli n’est toujours pas annoncée (bien qu’entamée depuis quinze ans).

François Wahl, editorial director of Seuil, was unsatisfied with the sample translations, which had been solicited from four different translators; Philippe Jaccottet likewise turned it down. In the Spanish market Grijalbo indicated some interest, but nothing came of it. Even Piper, who had held on to their option, decided against translating the book. In the English language market Collins, Jonathan Cape, Macmillan, and Hamish Hamilton all expressed interest, without advancing into formal negotiations; the American publisher Harcourt Brace commissioned a few samples but then declined. Among the so-called “minor” languages, by 1977 publishers from the Romanian, Polish, Brazilian, and Japanese markets had stepped forward (without, however, any sales of the rights). Even the Swedish house Forum, which had previously gone so far as to pick up their option, declined after having reviewed the sample translations. Such setbacks, which the author himself accepted and understood, helped bestow upon Horcynus Orca its status as a controversial, unclassifiable work of literature – a status that it retains to this day.
